Rural America is getting extra attention from the US Department of Transportation, according to Department of Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao. Chao recently visited Bowling Green, KY to talk to local lawmakers and business leaders about BUILD, or Better Utilizing Investment to Leverage Development.

Applications are now being accepted for nearly $1.5 billion in discretionary grant funding that’s being awarded through the program.  The grants are part of President Trump’s plans to fix America’s infrastructure.

“Most of the money spent (on transportation) over the last 10 years went to major urban areas,” Chao said. “The president’s plan is to ensure that rural America is not forgotten.”

Here lies countless opportunities for the private sector to enter public-private partnerships to improve rural infrastructure. Investment in Kentucky’s infrastructure paves the way for economic growth to both sectors.

“We will need greater participation from the private sector,” Chao said. “We don’t tap into the private markets as much as other countries do.”
