Opportunities for Medical Research Public-Private Partnerships Here to Stay

Medical research is a vast and daring industry that remains vital, but expensive, to the growing population. While expensive, we can’t afford to let the medical research industry fall by the wayside as doctors look for cures to Alzheimer’s, diabetes and Parkinson’s disease.

As a result, the medical research industry often has a door of opportunity open for public-private partnerships to form between governments, business and philanthropy. The Accelerating Medicines Partnerships (AMP) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has been combining the efforts of life science companies, nonprofits, the FDA and the NIH to find new medical treatments to detrimental and aggressive illnesses.

Recently, the Michael J. Fox Foundation partnered with the AMP and five life science companies to contribute $12 million in additional research efforts against Parkinson’s disease. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke has agreed to match funds, furthering the scope of the public-private partnerships.
